Facts about Child Custody

There are two types of child custody that may be granted by the court: joint legal custody (who can make legal decisions) and physical custody (where the child will live).

  • Legal custody allows one or both parents to have input into the major decisions of how the child will be raised, including choices about education, religion, medical care, and extracurricular activities.
  • Physical custody will specify the child’s primary residence as well as a schedule for parenting time (or visitation for a noncustodial parent).

Effective child custody agreements are best reached when parents work together cooperatively. If parents require additional resources to reach an agreement, we can help with a child custody evaluation. If parents cannot reach an agreement, our law firm represents clients in family court.
